Marais, Louisiana is a small unincorporated community located in Lafourche Parish, in southeastern Louisiana, United States. It is situated along Bayou Lafourche, a 106-mile-long bayou that flows through several parishes before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. Marais is located about 15 miles northeast of the city of Thibodaux, and about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans.
The area around Marais was first settled by French colonists in the early 18th century, who used Bayou Lafourche as a major transportation route for goods and people. Today, Marais is a primarily agricultural community, with crops such as sugar cane, soybeans, and corn being grown in the surrounding fields. The town also has a handful of small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a few local restaurants.
One of Marais' most notable landmarks is the St. Mary's Nativity Church, a Catholic church that was established in the late 1800s. The church's distinctive Gothic-style architecture and stained glass windows make it a popular destination for visitors to the area.
Marais is also known for its vibrant Cajun culture, which is celebrated through music, food, and festivals throughout the year. One of the town's most popular events is the Thibodauxville Fall Festival, which takes place each October and features live music, Cajun food, and local arts and crafts.
